RHINOPLASTY - NOSE SURGERY

About Rhinoplasty (Nose Surgery)

A rhinoplasty is an overall term used to describe a range of surgical procedures which may be used to re-shape the nose. The operation of rhinoplasty is sometimes called a nose job but this is a rather demeaning term for what is often a very difficult and exacting surgical procedure.

It is common to be dissatisfied with the size, shape or tip of your nose. Bumps on the bridge line. Noses that are too wide, short or drooping. Tips that are bulky or poorly refined. Crooked or twisted noses with or without breathing difficulties.

Rhinoplasty must create a nose that is in balance with the rest of the face.  It is vital that the nose should never draw attention away from one's eyes. Often surgery involves only subtle changes at surgery so risks are minimal and recovery is short.

Modern rhinoplasty techniques involve reshaping the existing nose, usually via an open approach which provides maximal visibility for your surgery. These advanced techniques have significantly improved the accuracy and predictability of the long term results. Rates of patient satisfaction and improved confidence are very high.

Types of Rhinoplasty

  • Primary rhinoplasty refers to operations on noses that have not had previous surgery.
  • Secondary or revision rhinoplasty is surgery on noses that have had 1 or more previous operations that have not produced the desired change.
  • Aesthetic or cosmetic rhinoplasty refers primarily to surgery aimed at improving the appearance of the nose.
  • In some cases nasal deformity on the outside is associated with deformity on the inside causing blockage. Functional rhinoplasty refers primarily to corrective surgery aimed at relieving nasal blockage. It is possible to perform aesthetic and functional rhinoplasty at the same time.

Preparing for a Rhinoplasty

Your plastic surgeon will consult with you prior to your scheduled rhinoplasty surgery so that they may fullly understand your requests. During this consultation your plastic surgeon will also detail the procedure, risks and benefits, as well as answer any questions you might have. They may require additional information from you before booking the procedure. This may include a photo, and/or a doctor's medical report.

This conversation with the plastic surgeon will give you a detailed understanding of the treatment, the extent of surgery and to clarify how the surgery will be performed. When you are satisfied with what has been discussed, and have signed a booking form for the operation, your nose surgery will be booked at a date agreed to.

You will then have another consultation with the surgeon when you arrive at the place your plastic surgery will take place. At this appointment you and your surgeon will discuss your goals, and any last questions you may have and finalise the plan for your cosmetic nose surgery.

Recommended Procedures that go well with a Rhinoplasty

Many people who choose to have a rhinoplasty have more than one cosmetic procedure done, such as chin implants or cheek implants at the same time for a more balanced look. Most cosmetic plastic surgeons even offer a discount when having other complementary procedures done while you have your nose surgery.

Is Rhinoplasty for me?

Cosmetic rhinoplasty seeks to improve the appearance of your nose but is not a guarantee for happiness and success in all aspects of your life. If you understand this and have specific aims as to what you would like changed about your nose you should be a good candidate for rhinoplasty. Similarly you should have realistic expectations and accept that there are limitations regarding what surgery can achieve physically and emotionally. If you approach surgery with this attitude you should be happy with the result.

If you are obssessional about the shape of your nose, if you are concerned about multiple or small imperfections, if you expect surgery to produce a perfect nose or if you think rhinoplasty will make you a more successful person and change the way others view you then rhinoplasty is NOT right for you.

Cosmetic rhinoplasty is non-urgent surgery designed to improve your quality of life. To minimise the risk of surgery and anaesthesia we will not accept for rhinoplasty any patient who does not enjoy good mental and physical health and does not have mature, realistic expectations
