People began having makeup permanently tattooed on the face more than fifteen years ago. Most commonly, people have their lips, eyebrows, and eyeliner tattooed. Permanent makeup can also be extremely useful for people who have suffered hair loss and scarring due to cancer or trauma.

Permanent lip tattoo can give more definition to the lips and reduce the appearance of lip bleed and scars.

Permanent eyebrow tattoo can solve the problem of having thin or faint eyebrows.

Permanent Makeup Procedure

The permanent makeup procedure is done in a cosmetologist's office or a plastic surgeon's office. Topical or local anesthetic is injected in the site to be treated. Then, the area is tattooed. Pictures of what the patient wants the final results to look like are helpful. The patient picks out the pigments to be used. The procedure is often done in several sessions, each lasting a half hour to 2 hours. The results will fade after 3-5 years.

Permanent Makeup Post-Procedure

  • Swelling in the treated area for 1-2 days
  • Neosporin ointment should be applied 2-3 times a day
  • Scabbing for the first week
  • Re-touch procedures are sometimes needed

Risks Associated With Permanent Makeup

  • allergic reaction to dyes
  • triggering of a herpes outbreak (lip tattoo)
  • pigments are not FDA regulated
  • possibility of contracting hepatitis

Permanent Makeup Considerations

The most important consideration a person should consider when thinking about having permanent makeup done is the experience of the practitioner. The professional you choose should be experienced in fine lines and tiny dots.
