What is Laser Resurfacing? Laser skin resurfacing, sometimes called "laser peels," are exactly that - a type of laser used to remove the skin, layer by layer to remove wrinkles, acne, scars, skin growths, blemishes, etc. There are different types of lasers designed to treat different problems.

Laser Resurfacing Procedure

The laser uses energy to precisely remove damaged skin.

Types of Laser Resurfacing

  • Ablative - removes the top layer of skin - the CO2 laser and the erbrium laser are ablative lasers - one treatment is all that is usually needed for desired result- crusting will last for 10 days after surgery - facial pinkness can last up to six months.
  • Non-ablative - heats the skin and causes the collagen to contract, making the skin tighter - the Photoderm, the Cool Touch, and the V-Beam are types of nonablative lasers - treatment is repeated monthly several times for desired results.

Anesthetic Used During Laser Skin Resurfacing

Mild sedation and topical anesthetic creams are commonly used.

After Laser Resurfacing

  • Bandages and an antibiotic ointment
  • Discomfort - pain medication and ice packs are prescribed - the first 3-5 days are the worst
  • Skin peeling around the 5th or 6th day
  • Sunburnt look
  • Red skin for several weeks to several months
