Electrolysis - Hair Removal
Medical Home > Cosmetic Plastic Surgery > Hair Removal (Electrolysis)
Electrolysis is a non-surgical method for permanent hair removal. Laser hair removal is more appropriate when treating large areas, but electrolysis is more thorough.
Electrolysis Procedure
During Electrolysis a low electrical current is sent down a tiny wire that is inserted into the hair follicle. Each follicle is treated separately. The electricity permanently causes the hair follicle to be unable to produce hair. Electrolysis does take longer than laser hair removal and more than one treatment is required because some hairs may not have been visible (not grown to the skin surface) at the time of the electrolysis treatment.
Risks Associated With Electrolysis
- discomfort
- redness
- blistering and scarring
- skin discoloration
