Open Discussion About an Intimate Topic:  Vaginal Surgery

By Ronald D. Blatt, M.D., F.A.C.O.G.

Opting to have surgery in the most intimate of places is a struggle for the many women who find they suffer from a variety of problems. As the Medical Director and Board Certified OB/GYN for The Manhattan Center for Vaginal Surgery, I consult and aide many of these women with the sensitivity and professionalism that this type of surgery demands.

Women come to the center for a variety of reasons; whether a woman needs post-pregnancy surgery, desires higher levels of sexual gratification, wishes for the ability to exercise without discomfort and wear all kinds of clothing, requires surgery for ethnic/religious reasons or simply wants a more aesthetically pleasing look, we are able to reconstruct areas for the optimum structural architecture. Our areas of expertise range from vaginoplasty, labiaplasty, hymen repair, and general vaginal reconstruction.

Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty is a surgical procedure which involves the tightening of vaginal muscles and support tissues as well as the reduction of redundant vaginal mucosa (relaxed vaginal lining). Childbirth, trauma, and even aging may cause the vagina to become stretched and the surrounding muscles lose their strength and tone. This loose feeling that many women feel is often noticed not only by them, but by their partners during sexual intercourse.

Vaginoplasty decreases the diameter of the vagina, which results in increased friction during intercourse. After surgeries, women and their partners often report increased levels of sexual gratification. The surgery is a standard gynecologic vaginal procedure where the vaginal vault and pelvic floor are made tighter and the foundation muscles of the vagina are made stronger.

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty refers to the trimming of labia minora, more commonly known as the lips of the vagina. Having enlarged or irregular labia minora may adversely affect the quality of life for patients, resulting in lowered self-confidence, discomfort with wearing clothing, exercising, or having sex. The enlarged labia can have a protuberant and abnormal appearance which can be bothersome and distressful.

More specifically, the unsightly appearance of excessive skin can cause psychological damage and may decrease the sexual desire in both partners. Women who have this excessive skin are often so embarrassed by it that it may take years before they discuss it with a friend and even longer before they seek correction of the problem.

Hymenography - Hymen Repair

Hymenography or Hymen Repair is most often a surgery for women whose cultures and religions necessitate the hymen being intact.  Unfortunately, this surgery could have a huge affect on a woman’s marriage prospects, family’s reputation, and in some instances even her very life.

The hymen is a membranous fold of tissue which covers the external vaginal orifice and is still a mythical symbol of virginity in many cultures. The actual surgery involves suturing a ruptured hymen.

General anesthesia and the supervision of a Registered Nurse are always recommended so that patients do not feel pain during surgery. Patients can, however, expect to have discomfort at the surgical site for a few post-operative days. This discomfort is greatly reduced by pain medication and antibiotics prescribed.

Full healing and a return to normal sexual activity take approximately six weeks. The end result of these procedures may not only be a more youthful appearance, improved sensation, and a more comfortable and confident sex life, but an overall improvement in the quality of life.
