Abdominoplasty (tummy tuck surgery) involves liposuction of abdominal fat, tightening and repairing muscles of the abdomen, and removing excess skin from the abdomen. Heavy lifting and strenuous activity are restricted for 6 weeks after surgery. Sex also has to be abstained from for 4-6 weeks. A support garment is worn over the abdomen for 4 weeks or more.

Types of Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck Surgery)

There are three types of the abdominoplasty:

  • Mini tummy tuck surgery - the surgeon makes a small incision in the pubic hairline. This procedure is done if the fat is below the navel, and it takes 1-2 hours to complete.
  • Modified tummy tuck surgery - the surgeon makes a larger incision a few inches above the belly button.
  • Full tummy tuck surgery - the surgeon makes a very large curved (like a smile) incision from hip to hip. This procedure is done if fat is above and below the navel, and there is excessive skin present. This procedure takes 2-5 hours to complete.

After the abdominal fat is removed, the abdominal muscles are tightened and returned to the correct position, using sutures to hold the muscles in place. Then, excess skin is removed and the incisions are closed.

Risks Associated with Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty like other cosmetic surgeries does have the risk of the following:

  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Bleeding
  • Bruising

Good Candidates for Abdominoplasty

People that have sagging skin and muscle weakness in the abdomen from pregnancy or large weight loss.

Women should wait to have a tummy tuck done until they are sure that they are not going to have more children. During pregnancy, the abdomen muscles can separate after a tummy tuck, and the abdomen could cause restrictive growth of the fetus.

Special Considerations While Preparing for Tummy Tuck Surgery

Do not get a sunburn on the abdomen, and do not smoke 2 weeks before or after surgery. Smoking interferes with the healing process.
