Malignant Mesothelioma

Malignant Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer in which malignant or cancerous cells are found in the mesothelium.  The mesothelium is a tissue that provides lining for organs such as the lungs, heart and stomach.  The mesothelium provides protection and lubrication to allow the organs to move.  Mesothelioma cancer can be benign or malignant and can affects any of these organs surrounded by the mesothelium.

Mesothelioma is caused by asbestos exposure and is a disease that causes the cells of the mesothelium to act abnormal.  Mesothelioma can spread to other parts of the body.  Though mesothelioma is a rare form of cancer, reported incidents have increased each year.  About 2,000 new cases are diagnosed each year and it's more common in men than women.  Risk for mesothelioma increase with age.

Most cases of mesothelioma, about 80%, are tied to asbestos expsoure and workers who were exposed to it every day.  Some cases however,  have involved no know exposure to asbestos.   Asbestos is the name for a group of fibers that appear naturally.  The fibers are thin and strong and are used in many industrial products such as insulation, cement, brake linings, roof shingles and textiles.  Exposure to asbestos also increase lung cancer, asbestosis and other asbestos cancer.
